Decorating Through The Lens of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is simple. The medicine involves 10 pairs of qualities with their opposite pairs. It functions on two laws, “like increases like,” and “opposites bring balance.” When I was going through Ayurveda School, Dr. Rosy, would often say “Ayurveda is everything.” I initially didn’t understand…How could Ayurveda be everything? Impossible. Ayurveda was diet and lifestyle recommendations, that’s it. WRONG! Little did I know that Ayurveda soon would seep into almost every decision I ever made.

I recently bought a condo, which suits me perfectly. This already was a decision based around Ayurveda. For those of you who know me, I’m Pitta-FIRE🔥! Its’ ON! We are blazing, passionate, intense, focused, driven. An imbalanced Pitta: Tell me I can’t do something, I’ll do it twice and show you the evidence. 😂 I find a great deal of satisfaction in striving, doing, accomplishing, slaying, “crushing it,” hitting my goal, and making a new goal.

I did not want another project. I wanted a mostly move-in-ready place, that beamed out energy of quiet, peace and tranquility. (My 20’s and early 30’s were a continuous stream of being out of balance. I had too much Fire & Air. Now, I am searching for slowness and bringing in the Earth element). I did not want a house that involved complete responsibility of the yard, driveway, roof, exterior walls, plumbing, and everything else. Even the home searching adventure itself was exhausting to me…constant notifications, new homes, private tours, summer weekends filled with house searching, getting excited and attached to a property only to see it switches to Pending a day later, driving by neighborhoods, etc. I was on my hunt for Ease.

I want to help you see Pitta in action. Pitta has the following qualities: light, sharp, hot, oily, liquid, spreading. Do you have a friend or family member who is high energy, gets really dialed in to their projects, they likely move fast, talk fast and have sharp energy and focus. They’ve got big goals. They seem to be the energizer bunny, they’re always going, typically with rosy cheeks or flush skin. They seem to have a sharp memory, and even sharp features. They can have a piercing gaze and you’re left to wonder “How did they do all of that?!” Also, don’t mess with their meals, hanger is a real thing for them!! They’re punctual, structured and organized.

So, I found the perfect condo to help me balance my Pitta. 💜🏡

I intentionally opted for light purple painted walls, a soft clover green couch, and a handful of round tables. All to balance Pitta. The Pitta dosha is Fire & Water. So to balance Pitta, we want to bring in the opposite qualities. So I brought in a soft, gentle, slightly dull bedroom color-the light purple. It’s serene and tranquil-it’s the opposite of bright/bold/intense. The soft clover green couch is the same, and adds an additional feel of the Earth element-which is beneficial for balancing Pitta (and Vata). The round table lacks sharpness-which we like. It has fluidity with the circular top, less intensity.

These are just a few examples of how Ayurveda is helping me decorate my home, guiding me on what colors, shapes and textures to gravitate towards. Ayurveda gives us the knowledge to intentionally & skillfully ponder (and answer): How do I want to create this space?
