Travel Talk: What Itinerary?!
I absolutely love coming back from vacation and feeling completely refreshed, content and grateful. Like many of you, my daily “at-home” life is very full. It involves running an LLC, teaching yoga, keeping the apartment clean and tidy, fitting exercise and self care into my schedule, making time for my family, friends, and my partner, scheduling “down-time” to read, enjoy the coffee shop, or hit the beach. My life is typically very structured, scheduled and organized and I most certainly always have a running to-do list that appears to have no end in sight, ever. (PS: If you’re trying to ditch your To-Do list, check out 4,000 Weeks by Oliver Burkeman).
When I travel, I make sure to give myself the freedom, ease, relaxation and unhurried pace I deserve and crave. My travel style is low key. It involves benches, people watching, unscheduled time, book shops, coffee shops, long drives if I feel inclined, restful sleep, slow mornings, and intentional exploring. I am always so proud of myself when I take vacation in a way that serves me.
I give myself permission to let vacation be like a giant love letter to myself-slow mornings, coffee in bed, walking at a slow pace staring at the buildings & other people, hanging out in coffee shops for hours (watching the locals interact, laugh, make beautiful cappuccino art), conversing with the bookstore employee, not staring at my phone, cooking a meal or two or three inside the Airbnb, sitting on as many benches as I can while people watching, eating a macaron for breakfast, and checking out the local yoga studio.
And to no surprise, one of the highlights of my most recent international trip was spontaneously driving a random route in Iceland, only to pull over and see the most perfect rainbow in the sky with my boyfriend. I truly believe some of the most amazing moments cannot be planned.
One of my favorite Ayurvedic practitioners, Dr. Claudia Welch believes that many of us could benefit from the recommendation, “do nothing.” I truly believe that when I actively participate in “doing nothing” I get this feeling of blissful fullness…which might be ironic. If the idea of “doing nothing” freaks you out-because you think you may feel empty or lifeless, try it out. It seems the opposite happens for me. I feel SO full and so authentic and so vibrant, like I am bursting at the seams of myself so grateful to be here experiencing life.
